Special Appointments and Career Achievements
Recruited and appointed to become a trained Professional
Champion to support my organization in presenting process
improvement and knowledge on:
Assessment of student strengths district-wide to better
identify students of color for possible participation in
Gifted/Talented Services in Minneapolis Public Schools.
Demonstrating Multicultural Education for culturally
diverse populations, providing modifications for the
learning environment, curriculum, assessments, and teaching
strategies.
Identifying specific needs, targeting and teaching
strategies to move an elementary school off of the No Child
Left Behind – Not Making Adequate Yearly Progress
designation.
Achieved success year after year in leading individuals and
teams in creative collaborative development processes
supporting their ability to successfully meet their goals
Actively provided a leadership role for over 15 years as
chair or co-chair of both the Professional Development and
Arts committees at five schools. Successfully collaborated
with school and district administration to assess staff,
needs, interests and new responsibilities to best plan and
present trainings and workshops.
Successfully welcomed and mentored “new to work” teachers,
staff members and volunteers of all ages, with a gift for
supporting and nurturing them in a way that leads to
self-discovery and development of their strengths. These
relationships have benefited myself as a mentor, the
volunteer; and, ultimately, the children.
Special Appointments and Career Achievements: Diversity
and G/T Development and Deployment
Educator on Special Assignment August 1998 – July 2001
Successfully collaborated on an ongoing basis with
specific schools and a variety of departments in regards to
their goals, curriculum, evaluation, assessment and
professional development.
Actively supported the director of Gifted/Talented
services in the rollout of new insights regarding cultural
competency to meet the charge by the Office Of Civil Rights
in regards to disparities in the number of students of color
participating in G/T programs. We crafted presentations for
a variety of audiences throughout the school district and
community, developed assessment tools for schools, and
integrated specific goals into the district’s elementary
schools ranking system. We provided research, professional
development, and guidance to all 72 schools and educational
sites. With this focused service, Minneapolis Public Schools
met the OCR objectives within my tenure.
Continuously responded with resources and facilitating
between two parties in regards to concerns and planning with
the elementary school community regarding the
identification, service, and quality of education for
students receiving Gifted/Talented services.
Specifically supported the rollout of a new program, G/T
assessment and service for students in grades K-2. The
rollout required professional development for principals,
G/T teachers and all K-2 classroom teachers in regards to a
paradigm shift in G/T services. This involved a new G/T
service model for teacher collaboration, performance-based
assessments and student observation. I guided 15 schools a
year through the start-up process while maintaining the
growth and development of the continuing schools. The
roll-out involved workshops and professional development for
each audience involved.
Successfully mentored all teachers new to the role of G/T
Resource Teacher in program design, curriculum and
assessment. Mentored experienced G/T Resource Teachers in
regards to the new assessment tools.
